Painting Deconstructed

These are a few things I am mindful of while drawing and/or painting. The more I am aware of these concepts, the less I have to think about them while I work, if that makes sense. It becomes more like second nature. And the more it becomes so, the easier it is for me to focus on the 'art'. I am shooting for a comfortably loose yet representational style, bordering on abstraction! And enjoying the process while am at it!

Outlining to define the composition

Taking note of angles and measures to break into the details

Using a couple of values to separate the light and shadow areas

Pushing the value scale to model the form

Creating distance from the subject, conceptually.

Helps to view the subject as patches of color put together. There is a whole lot to think about when it comes to these patches: Color, value, temperature, shape, size, harmony and placement, and everything is relative to the big picture of course. Squinting helps to reduce the subject to these minimal elements. And I think three values and/or colors are necessary to describe an object, at the very least!
